Essay on the biography of Indira Gandhi – A Powerful Leader. Indira Gandhi was the first woman Prime Minister of India. She was a dynamic leader. She was a world figure. She was daughter of the first Prime Minister of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. She was a leader of integrity, ability, experience and had the capacity to lead the nation to the path of progress and prosperity. After the death of Lai Bahadur Shastri, she was an obvious choice for prime minister ship.
Her childhood name was Indira Priyadarshni. She was born on 19 November 1917. She received her education in India and abroad. She was the only child of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru. She was brought up in the traditions and culture of Nehru family. In those days, her house was the hub of political activity and freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi was her political guru. She received early lessons of politics
from him. From her early childhood, she was attracted towards politics. She sought political training from Mahatma Gandhi as well as her father. She was put to jail several times. She actively participated in the freedom struggle of India.
Indira Gandhi was a true patriot. She was the champion of the poor. She devoted herself to the task of nation building. She worked hard for the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden. Under her capable leadership, India saw the initiation of Green Revolution, which made the country self-reliant in terms of food grain production. Her leadership brought pride to the country in the comity of nation. Her twenty-point programme instilled new hope in the life of the people. She nationalized 14 banks of the country. She played a significant role in the creation of Bangladesh. She led the country to victory in 1971 India-Pakistan war.

Since her childhood, she was bold and courageous. She never hesitated in taking tough decision. She held independent opinion of her own on vital issues. She became the President of Indian National Congress many times.
Unfortunately, this great leader met a tragic end. She was shot dead by two of her own security guards on 31st October 1984. Her death was a big loss to the nation. She will always be remembered for her vision, courage and foresightedness.
