If a careful study of tribal movements is made, it would be found that many of the things of tribal life are passing through a crisis. The tribals all over the country are essentially a hill and forest people. The forests are decayed and ruined. They no more provide any livelihood and support to the tribals.
As the history turns, the tribals have become peasants. Now, they are faced with the problem of land alienation and dispossession. They had their animistic culture which is known as tribal culture.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
With the tribal identity as forest dweller being oblivious, the tribals are even losing their culture. K.S. Singh says that the tribals have started a new movement whereby they want to evolve their own culture and script.
The Gonds have lost their Gondi language; the Bhils have lost their Bhili. And, thus, if the tribals fail to protect and revive their script and language, they will be deprived of their identity.
The tribals would be Hindus only, Christians only and their nativism or aboriginalism would be forgotten. Introducing the revival of tribal script and language movement, K.S. Singh observes:
The efforts to evolve a script and build up an indigenous literature in tribal language may be seen as part of an overall movement to define and assert tribal identity.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Singh has reported about such a movement in Chotanagpur area, where the tribals are demanding for the revival of their tribal culture. They also want to recreate many of the cultural symbols of the past.
The movement for revival for language is also found among the tribals of central India and northern Andhra Pradesh. However, the involvement of tribals in such movements is very weak.
