In autumn, the countryside becomes picturesque. The fields around the dusty roads look so vivid. The tall Indiana corn is left thoroughly dried to be used as a fodder for the animals in form of tent-like heaps.
The sounds of cocks and hens in the farms feel pleasant. The farmer has finished with his harvest which is depicted in the line ’As he leaves the house, bareheaded’ and so it is the best and most enjoyable time for him. The refreshing air and the sun rays seem like a reward for the hard work that he has done so far.
The atmosphere becomes vibrant and lively. Blossoming flowers and the humming bees are missed as its autumn, but the breeze is so pleasant and the farms are so colorful and vibrant that one feels joyous and refreshed. The sight of corn wigwams and huge pumpkins lying here and there is bound to attract anyone passing by the farms. The haying is already over by this time and the narrator is out to feed the animals during the afternoon and morning walks. The scorching summer heat is over. The scenic beauty is so colorful that even a painter can not give such colors to his picture. There is an extraordinary crispness and hue in the air which is intense and brilliant to be enjoyed.
Though the corn which has dried and the golden leaves are tangled give a desolated and deserted look, yet it seems to be telling the stories of the barns that grew to fill it.
