Tom Stoppard, the philosopher writer has tried to compare war with capitalism in the following statement. There is a special sense created with the addition of the phrase “gloves off. This is one of the most vivid description of capitalism. And the writer has tried to draw parallel between war and capitalism. Tom Stoppard has been said to be an anti-capitalist thinker.
He decries and abuses capitalistic way of production in this statement. For him war is capitalism without weaving gloves, means capitalism with naked hands. The statement has many latent meanings. By one meaning war is capitalism and even worst type of capitalism. War is a barbaric and inhuman activity which should be discouraged and won’t allowed to happen. Wars created a brutal situation-of homicides and is totally against ethics.
By second meaning we many say that capitalism is a brutal type of economic system which becomes warlike if it practiced at its limit or at its full bloom. This has an implied meaning that capitalism can do no good to mankind and so to the society. Since the healthiest form of capitalism tallies with war how can wars be useful for human beings and their societies?
ADVERTISEMENTS:
By other meaning we may say that capitalism has inhuman and revenging impulses in itself. Greet is the essence of capitalism-accumulation of the surplus value. This surplus value is the method of maximising profits – the motto of capitalistic, mode of production. Since men possess insatiable urge for material things, i.e., capitalism, the limit of the end of capitalism brings competitions in naked conditions of confrontation.
The confrontation reaches the peak and there is an inevitability of war. Several wars till date have been fought for material gains and imperialistic expansion. Thus, we are able to draw parallels between war and capitalism. And we may conclude that the worst phase of capitalism, which capitalists say the best phase of it, in war and nothing else. When capitalism starts speaking in its best possible language it speaks in the language of war annihilation.
