On August 25 last year, as I set in my study poring over my books, I had a knock at my door. Opening the door, I stood face to face with a telegraph peon with an express telegram for me.

My feeling at the moment can better be imagined. I lost no time in reading it. It was a summons from uncle to take the first train to see him.

Fortunately, there was still an hour for the Bombay Express to leave for Amritsar. I ordered my servant to arrange the nec­essary luggage. I dressed myself quickly and went in to break the news to other members of the family. I took hurried leave of them and drove to the station in a Tonga with my servant.

As the Tonga stopped, a number of porters surrounded us. One of them was engaged and my servant accompanied him to the platform while I made for the booking office to purchase my tickets. At my place in the queue I stood and moved slowly onwards till I found myself at the counter and had my tickets.

There were five minutes still for the train to arrive when I reached the platform. All eyes were peering into the distance. When 10, a patch of smoke was seen rising at the horizon.

Shortly afterwards the train steamed in with its puffs and whistles and caused a great hurry, noise and bustle on the platform. It was an orderly for me to board the train and get a seat, but, thank god, after a lot pushing and elbowing I found myself comfortably seated, after all.

To witness the station on the arrival of the train was sight indeed, with interesting cries of vendors, the rush of passengers, the lines of red-shirt porters moving up and down and the station staff in their characteristic uniform at their respec­tive posts.

The guard now blew his sharp whistle and ward his green flag as the starting signal was lowered. The engine whistled and the train began to move and soon put on speed. It was pleasant to have the cool breeze in the face.

The trees and the plants seemed to run quickly in the oppo­site direction. Some of my fellow passengers began to chitchat while others opened their books and fixed their eyes on them, while I, seated by a window, was content to feast my eyes on the beautiful landscape.

Stations came and went but there was noth­ing eventful on the way except for the fact that between some stations, I was squeezed in something for want of accommoda­tion.

Late in the evening, I reached Amritsar where my uncle was already on the platform to receive me. He embraced me and took me home. It was in the Tonga that he informed me that he had called me for an interview with the Deputy Commissioner for an appointment for which, he thought, I was so well qualified.
