Today ‘games and sports’ have become an integral part of the present- day school education. Of late educationists, teachers and school administrators have come to realise the importance of sports and games in school life.
Once upon a time games and sports were looked upon merely as a ‘period of break’ to extend the muscles, and to give a time of rest to the students. But today its value has been mostly recognised, and is considered as an integral part of school curriculum.
One of the prime considerations in having games and sports in school is to develop the inborn sports talents of students. If proper opportunities are given, young children full of energy and vigour can excel in sports and games.
School is not only a place to develop student’s mental abilities but also a place where they can develop their hidden sports talents. Our P.T. Usha, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Anju Bobby George, etc., did not emerge out of the moon. They all got a good start during their school life.
The value of sports and games in breaking the monotony of school life cannot be undermined. Generally games are provided after several periods of classes. It enables the students to relax. It gives them vigour and fresh energy.
Diversion of mind by way of games and sports can boost children’s learning process. Today, our children are overburdened, with workload. In this context, games and sports can have a soothing effect, and lessen their negative impact.
The physical aspect of games and sports must not be overlooked. When children run around, move about, do exercise, and engage in various types of activities in the open air by way of games and sports activities, it helps them physically.
Their bodies grow, muscles develop, and minds relax. It makes them physically alive and healthy. Doctors often say that those children who spend most of their time in idling away or in too much of reading and studying, end up as more of physical wrecks rather than physically healthy individuals.
Another major contribution of games and sports is the discipline it imparts to the students. During sports, games, and competitions, children learn to stick to rules, abide by referee’s decision and control one’s feeling when provoked.
Games particularly various types of open- field competitions, require a great deal of self-control, orderly behaviour and disciplined participation. It trains them to accept victory as well as defeat gracefully. It is in the field that this discipline is imparted and inherited.
We must say that in the days to come, games and sports are likely to play a major role in the school curriculum, and may become an academic subject itself. Apart from the academic aspect, games and sports play a vital role in bringing about discipline among students, and good career opportunities. It provides relaxation and recreation, makes school life lively and exciting as well as makes them physically fit and mentally alive.
